Google Sidebars

Originally posted on Saturday, August 06, 2005

Some Google features work as sidebars, and some do not.

I recently discovered http://www.google.com/pda which works really well as a sidebar except that you must be sure to CTRL-click (that’s CMD-click for you Mac-heads) on the search result links, otherwise the results will load in the sidebar, which will make it very difficult.

I was briefly hopeful that http://toolbar.google.com/send/sms/ would work as well. However, the window attempts to close after the message is sent and leaves no way to get back to the original URL. So you can try it, but you won’t like it.

I would be remiss if I didn’t remind folks about the Google Advance Search Panel [GASP].

Perhaps the SMS feature could be fixed with User JavaScript (day 10)?

Instead of http://www.google.com/pda, you should try either http://www.google.com/ie or http://www.google.com/xhtml. /ie doesn't require control-clicking, and /xhtml has a couple extra search types.

Is there a compelling reason to have a google sidebar, when there's already a search sidebar that includes google?
