Tweakers' rejoice! An inside look at files used by Opera under MSWindows

Updated list of Files Used By Opera for Windows (thanks Rijk!)

This is handy to use especially when backing up Opera’s files (although backing up all the files in your personal directories listed in opera:about is a good idea (except the cache files, of course).

For backing up files, I use a batch program.

Get WinRAR if you don't have it, and make a shortcut with the address:

"C:\Program Files\WinRAR\WinRAR.exe" a -hpPASSWORD -m5 -r -agYYMMDD-HHMMSS OperaBackup- @Opera-BackUp.txt"

Let's dismember this. The first piece is making sure you use WinRAR for this to make the RAR file. The 'a' means you're making a compressed file. The hp means you'll protect it with a password, which will be PASSWORD (edit this as you like ;)). The rest of the line means it is compressed via m5, and that the filename will be the current date in YYMMDD-HHMMSS setting with 'OperaBackup' in front of it. The last piece is the file in which you'll define which files need to be backupped. This is the content of my Opera-BackUp.txt file:

=====START=======
// Directories to back up
// C:\Program Files\Opera\Mail\ // Mail
C:\Program Files\Opera\program\plug-ins\ // Plug-ins
C:\Program Files\Opera\profile\images\ // Favicons
C:\Program Files\Opera\profile\keyboard\ // Keyboard configuration
C:\Program Files\Opera\profile\menu\ // Menu configuration
C:\Program Files\Opera\profile\mouse\ // Mouse configuration
C:\Program Files\Opera\profile\sessions\ // Sessions - saved windows
C:\Program Files\Opera\profile\Skin\ // Skin
C:\Program Files\Opera\profile\toolbar\ // Toolbar configuration
// Files to back up
// C:\Program Files\Opera\profile\Contacts.adr // Contacts for e-mail & instant messaging
C:\Program Files\Opera\profile\notes.adr // Notes
C:\Program Files\Opera\profile\opcacrt6.dat // Certificate authorities
C:\Program Files\Opera\profile\opcert6.dat // Personal certificates
C:\Program Files\Opera\profile\opera6.adr // Bookmarks
C:\Program Files\Opera\profile\opera6.ini // Opera settings
C:\Program Files\Opera\profile\opssl6.dat // SSL preferences
C:\Program Files\Opera\Ousr600.dat // Registration information
C:\Program Files\Opera\profile\search.ini // Search engines
C:\Program Files\Opera\profile\wand.dat // Wand data
C:\Program Files\Opera\profile\cookies4.dat // Cookies
C:\Program Files\Opera\profile\global.dat // Global history
C:\Program Files\Opera\profile\vlink4.dat // Visited links
C:\Program Files\Opera\profile\download.dat // Download history
========END==========

Remove the slashes if you want to add 'Mail' and your contacts. Edit as you like.

You have to put the shortcut and the txt file in thesame folder (or change the shortcut line if you would to have it in different folders).
If you did it right, it will create files with filenames such as OperaBackup-050724-214614.rar. My files are around 6mb each.

Good luck!

This might be a bit out of line, but since we're talking about doing backups of these sort of critical files ...

For those of you using Directory Opus (and the only reason you wouldn't be is because you haven't used it a week), look into the concept of FILE COLLECTIONS. This allows you to drag and drop folders and files into a 'virtual folder' called something like ... say ... WEEKLY BACKUP ... and it keeps a Windows recognizable, yet VIRTUAL only copy of these files. This means its totally possible to drag and drop those virtual entries into backup software (say Nero) and it will recognize them as REAL files and folders. This works across your LAN (backup the wife's copy of Opera too) and any other path that is recognizable by Windows.

Feel free to contact me if you need any help doing this ... Opera is part of my weekly backup cycle (and its saved me) and this is one super easy way to do it.

That's a great tip! I have now done it to Eudora too!
