Advanced Preferences

2005-09-21: This page was revised in light of the fact that Opera is now free.
Also, someone (rightly) pointed out that the way that the Advanced Preferences were divided up made sense as the series was released, but as far as a reference, it was less than useful. Who wants to try to remember which features were covered on which day? And some of the pages were very long. This new format will make shorter pages and hopefully make it easier for people to find what they are looking for.
Whoo boy! Ok, get comfortable, we’re in for a ride now. Opera calls these “Advanced” preferences, and some of them are, but this really could have been called “Miscellaneous” or “Other” or “And the Kitchen Sink”
But, faithful reader, fear not! I shall be thy Preferences Sherpa, and will guide thy feet (err, um, I mean, mouse and/or keyboard).
First off, we’re going to agree not to dwell on the names that these different sub-sections were given. It might be easy to argue that they are not the best names, but if you try to come up with something better you’ll probably find (as I did) that it ain’t so easy.
If you’re a savvy web user (and since you’re reading this series, we know that you are ;-) I can almost guarantee that you will want to tweak some of the settings we’ll look at below. Just remember: don’t get overwhelmed! Sure there are a lot of options, but you don’t have to touch any of them. The defaults are set to work for most people. But once you are ready to really start customizing Opera to your liking, there’s almost no end to what you can do.
- Browsing
- Preferences related to the way that windows are created and managed, specifically: Cycle Pages, Page Loading, Page Icons, New Pages, and More.
- Search
- Preference settings related to Opera's powerful search features.
- Notifications
- Control the way that Opera tells you when something happens (or tell it not to bother you)
- Content
- What is “Content”? Simply put, it is where you will find controls for a whole host of settings which determine how and what Opera displays when you visit a webpage.
- Fonts
- Control Opera's user interface fonts
- Downloads
- Manage your downloads, including advanced options to automatically save certain files in certain folders
- Programs
- Control how Opera works with other installed applications and protocols
- Source Viewer
- Tell Opera which external program to use for viewing web page source code (err....markup... whatever).
- History
- Tell Opera how much it should remember about where you've been surfing.
- Cookies
- Tell Opera what cookies to accept, what to reject, and what to tell you when it does it.
- Security
- Settings to help keep browsing with Opera as safe as possible, including Master password, certificates, and security protocols.
- Network
- Set proxy servers, server name completion, UTF-8 encoding, referrer logging, automatic redirection, # of connection, and browser ID.
- Toolbars and Menus
- Resources for customizing your toolbars and menu preferences (See tweak footnote)
- Shortcuts for keyboard or mouse
- Customize your keyboard and mouse settings, including middle click options for the mouse
